The man, whose name was given as David, a hair stylist residing at the Surulere area of Lagos State, was said to have decided to visit his friends after he closed his salon on August 3, 2002.
It was gathered that while he was with his friends, they saw another friend in his car and were joking together, asking the fried to give them money to enjoy themselves.
However, at that moment, some policemen came to raid at the location and while the other friends were said to have fled on seeing the officers, David was not lucky as he was arrested and taken to the police station where he was detained. Continue Full Reading>>>
Two weeks later, on August 16, 2022, David was arraigned in court, charged for the offence of breach of peace, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The court granted him bail but he could not perfect the bail conditions, consequently causing him to be remanded in prison custody.
His plight was announced by a foundation that usually visits prisons and courts in Lagos State, the Headfort Foundation (Prison Reform Initiative), on its Twitter handle on Tuesday which added that its lawyers met David in custody and one of the lawyers began to represent him in court.
According to the foundation, the case suffered various adjournments because the police did not come to court to give evidence or provide any witnesses and this made the lawyer to pray for the matter to be struck out for want of diligent prosecution.
The court thereafter granted the prayer, discharged and acquitted David after he spent eight months and three weeks in police and prison custody.
