For the third consecutive election and a total of four times, Daniel Ortega is expected to win the presidency. Following the 2016 general election, Ortega was re-elected as president of Nicaragua, and his wife, Rosario Murillo, was chosen as his new vice president. They were the first married couple to hold the position.

Daniel Ortega is one of the longest-serving non-royal leaders in the world and the longest-serving non-royal leader in the Americas. First elected president in 1985, he unsuccessfully sought reelection in 1990, 1996, and 2001 before triumphing in 2006 and 2011.

Nicaraguan presidents were not allowed to serve successive terms prior to Ortega’s election, but that did not stop him in 2011. The constitutional amendment that ended term limitations for the presidency in January 2014 was spearheaded by a member of his party in the National Assembly, which allowed him to continue serving as president indefinitely.

Murillo Ortega, Daniel Ortega’s wife, had additionally served as the government of Nicaragua’s minister and senior spokeswoman in the past.

Both Vice President Rosario Murillo and President Daniel Ortega were reelected in the most recent general election, which was held in 2021.

Ortega has won five elections, including four in succession, since his first run for president in 1984 and his election as president in 1985. They will remain in charge until 2027.

President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo, who got married in 2005, have seven kids together and are both in their seventies.
