Armed herdsmen attack Benue LG once more, killing 18 people and beheading women and children

According to reports, the assailants burned the bodies of many victims, including their homes and food barns, in addition to beheading some of the victims.

Under the condition of anonymity, a local who lost a sibling in the attack stated that the terrorists stormed the village on Sunday evening at around 6pm, which was a market day in the neighborhood.

“Fulani herdsmen attacked the Iye community on Sunday around 6 o’clock,” he claimed. My brother was one among the over 18 persons they killed. Several other people were hurt, and numerous houses, including some of the victims’, were set on fire. “This attack is unfortunate because my family and I were driven out of our village, Tse-Orvihi, Uvir Council Ward of the same Guma LGA, and took refuge at Iye, where they now came and killed my brother yesterday,” the victim’s family member said.

The Guma LGA’s Security Secretary, Mr. Christopher Waku, confirmed the news, stating that the attack took place between 6 and 7 o’clock.

18 persons were killed in the incident at Iye village, which is close to the JS Tarka University in Makurdi according to what he stated.

The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Julius Alawari who also confirmed the attack said seven corpses had been recovered from the scene of the attack.

According to the Police Commissioner, “a combined team of Operation Whirl Stroke, the Police, and the Volunteer Guards confronted and repelled them. One of the attackers was also killed.”
